THE FIRST AWARD/GALA NITE IN CELEBRATION OF THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF STUDENT CHRISTIAN MOVEMENT OF NIGERIA (SCM)

When Mr. Moses Okezie asked me to anchor the 1st Award/Gala Night in celebration of 75th Anniversary of Students Christian Movement (SCM), I was elated for many reasons.

SCM is one society every Christian is happy to be associated with because of the positive role it plays in the society.

It is interesting to note that this organization has been in existence long before the country’s independence. That meant they had survived all kinds of setbacks, tribulations that naturally came with running an organization.

SCM has played and continued to play a role in protecting students some of whom would have joined cults or become wayward.

SCM has assisted in the moulding of many successful people in Nigeria and beyond.

Just like Mr. Wole Olufon one of the award recipients said, he gave his life to Christ in secondary school as a member of SCM and SCM helped to shape him into whatever he is today.

Who knows one of the invited guests remarked whether the cult and other nefarious activities in schools would not have been completely eradicated if there were more of these kinds of character moulding associations in secondary schools and universities.

The theme of the Gala Nite which held in The Atrium of Yar’adua Cente, Central Business Area, Abuja was, ‘The Nigerian Youth Building Community- Becoming Productive.’

The occasion drew a lot of dignitaries who were around to testify to the positive impact of SCM in their lives.

Guests were treated to special rendition by the Students of System Education School, Kubwa, Abuja.

Whereas the Welcome Address was delivered by the National President, Rev. Eric Ighalo (FSC, JP), a special welcome address was given by the Chief Host- His Grace, The Most Rev. Dr. Nichola Okoh, Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.

The keynote address which was rich in content, calling on all youths to be proactive and resourceful was delivered by Dr. Otive Igbuzor.

On hand to give their goodwill messages among others were;
The Speaker of the House of Representatives through his representative
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, through his representative
His Eminence Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the President of Christian Association of Niger through his representative Dr. Asika, General Secretary, CAN
Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God through his representative Pastor Ibitayo, Regional Pastor of Redeemed.

SCM through one of its officials; Honourable Godwin Ogenyi, unveiled the SCM Endowment Fund/Projects. These include; SCM Women and Skill Acquisition Centre in Benin-City, Youth Empowerment and Movement Administrative centres, John R. Mott International Centre, SCM Farm project and Ibadan SCM Guest house.

He used the opportunity to call on the invited guests to give generously to see that these projects became realities.
