MEET BUKOLA OLUWATOSIN ADEBAYO WHO DESIGNS SHOES, BAGS AND OTHER ACCESSORIES

I met Bukola last year after we have been friends in facebook for sometime. She is feminine in nature but behind that is a lady desiring to succeed in business. It was wonderful to note that instead of looking for the proverbial ‘white collar’ job, she wanted to set up a business of her own.  She told me of her cleaning business.

I was not surprised when sometime this year, I discovered that she was now into show making and was making a great job of it. I have no doubt that in years to come, she would have become a leading entrepreneur in Nigeria. Her business name is ATOR.

I therefore decided to interview her.

YOUR FULL NAMES AND ANY NICKNAMES:
Adebayo Oluwatosin Bukola. Nickname: Ator Bsc.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION:
Urban and Regional Planning from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

WHAT THINGS DO YOU MAKE?
I started from making bags, jotters and accessories using African Fabric. After a while, I started being intrigued by shoes to the extent that anytime I came across a good shoe, after the normal admiration, I began to wonder and imagine HOW- the pattern, sowing, and cobbling. I knew then that I had to learn about shoes. I make palm slippers, moccasins, toms, loafers, lace - up, and heels (male and female). I also make belts and leather wrist band.

DO YOU ENJOY WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
Yes I really enjoy what am doing. The fact that it's all based on my creativity is an added bonus.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE?
Presently, getting people to know my products is the main challenge am encountering.

HOW HAS THE RECEPTION BEEN SO FAR?
The reception so far is not as good as i want it because people are yet to know us but am confident that it can only get better.

SHOE MAKING IS TRADITIONALLY FOR MEN. HOW DO YOU FEEL FORAYING IN A WHAT SEEMS TO BE A MAN’S PROFESSION?
The fact that I can deliver (better) what they (men) are delivering nullifies the notion that it's a man's business. What is really important is the quality of what I have and not my Gender.

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUR BUSINESS?
I intend to have shoe manufacturing company based here in Nigeria. Establishing Shoe learning Institute where aspiring shoe designers will be trained.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WANT TO GIVE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO GO INTO SHOE MAKING
Make sure the passion is there.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE GRADUATED AND LOOKING FOR ‘WHITE COLLAR’ JOBS?
My advice to young people (graduate or undergraduate) is LEARN A SKILL.

I WISH BUKOLA SUCCESS IN HER NEW BUSINESS ENDEAVOUR.
