ADVENTURES OF MC: MY EXPERIENCE AT THE NIGHT OF CLASSICS AND CELEBRATING WOMANHOOD

Sometime in the early week of March, I received a call from a dear Facebook friend who I was yet to meet (when someone you don’t know takes his time to like your posts or comment on them, you are bound to take notice. So by the time Francis Ekwere called me, I recognized him as one of my followers.

He told me his brother’s wife was having a show and he wanted me to anchor it. I asked him if he has ever seen me anchor a programme before. He said no. Except that I usually post events that I have anchored and he believed that I was the right person to anchor the high profile event.

So many things ran through my head; favour, grace and self-publicity combined can work for you.

The only detail he gave me before the brother and his wife contacted me was the show was going to essentially revolve around Patience Ekwere who sings opera.

They did eventually call me. In the words of the brother, after going through my CV as found on the website, they wondered if they could afford me.

Eventually they did call and we firmed up and such that by Saturday the 19th of March I landed in Uyo for the show.

The show A NIGHT OF CLASSICS CELEBRATING AFRICAN WOMEN, took place the next day at Le Meridien Ibom Hotel.

It was a strictly by invitation event. The hall was large and considering it was classical music, they had an impressive gathering.

I am sure just as I was, not many people in the audience were conversant with classical music. A lot like the people I invited came out of curiousity. Even the two MCs for the evening; MC Mbakara and MC George remarked the same thing.

The closest I came to classical music was when my son Chukwuemeka Obi-Obasi performed with his school mates. He has earlier obtained a distinction in a violin examination set by Musical society of Nigeria (Muson).

I WAS NOW FACED WITH A DILEMMA. HOW DO I NAVIGATE THE WATERS (THE PROGRAMME)? BEING THAT I AM ALSO A COMEDIAN, AM I SUPPOSED TO COMPLETELY LEAVE OUT JOKES? DO I CLOWN A BIT OR CLOWN A LOT? OR DO I SHOW THE KIND OF SERIOUSNESS THAT GOES WITH THE MUSIC ITSELF?

To resolve the dilemma, I prayed for wisdom. Who wouldn’t want to come back to Uyo again and again to anchor one program or the other?

I decided to look at the programme again. I discovered that two comedians were invited to perform. Secondly, there was a dance troupe. That was an indication that they did not want it that to be all that serious. I also remembered what I was always told; people are best when they are themselves.

I decided that I was going to be myself while at the same time, watching the reactions of everyone.

When I discovered that were relaxed as they lapped up all the small talks I made in between each item on the programme, I knew that I was doing okay.

The deeper and deeper I went into the programme the more confident I became.

At the end of the day, I smiled and tucked that performance into my CV. So, in addition to many jobs like book launch, wedding, valentine night etc, I have also anchored a classical show.
